This blog contains personal reflections on Sahaja Life by practitioners of the Sahaja technique. Sahaja is the path of enlightened knowledge, as opposed to other forms of yoga and meditation, which profess singular paths like devotion-only (bhakti path). Growth in Sahja happens by experiential knowldge acquisition.
The following informative page answers questions on how the brain responds to Sahaja meditation. It's calming effect can be seen from the brain activation patters observed via EEG. Here is an extract. Go here for the full article.
Electrophysiological studies (EEG) measure the electrical activity from groups of neurons on the surface of the scalp. EEG studies comparing the brain activation of long-term Sahaja Yoga practitioners (11) to short-term Sahaja Yoga meditators (16) found specific brain activation patterns corresponding to the subjective feelings of thoughtless awareness and happiness experienced by the Meditators (Aftanas and Golocheikine, 2001, 2002, 2000). In their EEG measures, the long-term meditators showed increased power in low band frequency EEG activity of theta and alpha, which was particularly pronounced over the left frontal regions.

Traveling for Sahaja is a great equilizer. It exposes you to new energies. Sometimes the new energies can be strong awakenings brought about by concepts hitherto unknown. New ways of spreading the love, new ways of strengthening collectivity, new ways of connecting and new ways of looking at the self.
And it works both ways. When you travel out and when others travel to you and bring an invisible bag of goodies, which are ideas.
This past weekend, two dynamic yogis from Toronto landed in Michigan. In the tradition of Sahaja hobbithood, we did what we usually do. Spread love, poster around, eat, sing, make merry and share stories. We sown seeds in each other's hearts and lands. We'll try to nourish these seeds by visiting each other more often and see the seeds sprout in the light of truth and rain of Mother's love.
Los Angeles, and then Detroit has become a the latest newsmaker for violence related to the financial meltdown. Insanity draws closer. If you feel mildly worried or concerned and need peace, I recommend meditation using Sahaja Yoga. There is even a local meeting place close to Detroit. So do not wait and act now for a balanced life.
A group of European yogis currently on a realization tour in cities of Morocco, in Northwest Africa. As you see in the attached pictures they also offered a piece of cloth worn by Shri Mataji to the Atlantic ocean, the cloth was placed in a lamp and the offering was done on the request of Shri Mataji Herself.
Toronto area collective organizes 4 or 5 "Going Deeper" seminars for their newly established seekers (as 'young' as 2 weeks). This is not the International Toronto Seminar that happened in early August ,when Mother was expected to visit Canada.
The best part is that they make the Sahaj vidya teaching (treatments, Sahaj culture) a fun experience! Here is a quick rundown of some nice things we observed:
How to make an alter: Instead of a "talk-by-yogi" two yogis used a role-playing improvisation skit to educate and entertain everyone on all aspects & principles of making a decent alter at home. The audience was forced to participate as the 'actors' made well rehearsed 'mistakes'. Being an instructional person, I was amazed at the power of skits to impart Sahaj concepts.
There were some men-only sessions (head massage) and women only sessions (how to wear a sari) and combined sessions (how to clear house of negativities.)
The evenings started with talent shows - skits, music etc by yogis. After a tea break, the bhajan group would break out their well polished bhajans which alone make the trek to toronto worth it.
These are two day seminars. Recent synergy has resulted in Toronto and Detroit collectives to think about supporting programs in the border cities of Detroit/Toronto. More on that later.
The nature of life on earth is illusory and in the Sanskrit tongue it is called Maya or illusion, and every soul having the spark of the divine love, forgets the use and the purpose of that spark and begins to love itself most.
By a keen study of human life, man will find that as a rule, when he claims that he loves, in reality he loves himself, he loves his own benefit in life, he loves another for the help that other gives, for his goodness, for his kindness, for his service, but in all this he surely loves himself, and it is for himself all the while he thinks he loves another.
It is a very high stage in the path of love when man really learns to love another with a love that asks no return, when he does not seek love for the sake of love in return, then love becomes pure, the lover gives, and gives and gives, but even that is not the purpose of life, it is still greater. The Perfect One who is the source and origin of the whole creation, is the Perfection of Beauty. All beauty on earth or in heaven belongs to Him, and the purpose of the creation of every soul is to progress in the path of love until the soul arrives at a stage where it may find the Perfection of Beauty.
The development of love is often hindered by different obstacles in life. The first obstacle is ourselves. We begin our life with selfishness, and all that we want is for self, and if there is a tendency to love, it is for one's own happiness, and one's own joy. When the question comes, 'How much do you love me, and how much do I love you?' it has come to be a trading in love. 'I love you, but you do not love me' is as much as to say, 'I have bid so much, and I expect a return of love'. This is trading in love, and trade cannot lead anywhere, because it makes one think of the self, and love is beyond that. To love is to give; it is not to take at all. The true lover never speaks of what he has done for his beloved, for he loves for love's sake, not for the sake of a return.
If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you; If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or, being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with triumph and disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breath a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch; If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you; If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run - Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
The Ganesha puja started after Mother's joyous arrival.
The welcome program was unique as birthday delicitations from the state of Connecticut, president George bush and CA governor Arnold Schwazzeneger.
In the entire puja Mother radiated smiles, bathe all in pleased attention and gave detailed instructions to the pujari and others. Always smiling, acknowledging like what we've seen many years before. She talked and joked with the children at length, smiling laughing and attending to their every word with expressions, gestures and words.
She talked in detail, almost 10 - 15 minutes to all gift presenters, taking it back to many years before. She talked to USA yogis for almost 20mins. Hope the presenters can share what Mother's advice for America was. We desired Mother's words could be heard by everyone. When the Chinese came on, she was given a mic and we could hear her concern for china to approach it's manufacturing in a different way. To direct production to silk and handi crafts.
From memory, Mother's comments about China are reproduced roughly at the end.
But first, to share a twist in the tale. After the hosting countries and a couple of gifts, the end of the ceremony was announced with the vote of thanks for puja in closing. But Mother.indicated that She would like to go on with all the country gifts that evening! The pendal broke into thunderous applause as the program continued with Mother pleased beyond anything seen before. And then this happened again, and we went into a third round of gift giving!
Mother's presence was almost 7.30p to 11p local time.
China comments, not exact:
Handicraft and handmade goods are great in china. In this country (Italy) you can buy a lot of Chinese silk, but in china you cannot get it! [laughter]
It (production.of artistic and handicrafts) should all come back through sy. There is no demand for nonsensical things.
As communists you can progress if you understand what is important(to manufacture), and that you can produce. You have so many things you can develop, handi craft.
I am very much for handicrafts' but people have lost faith for handi crafts. But if you make it in your country, they wil buy here at a good price.
Make artistic things. Handi crafts.
I've been in china twice. Very nice people, very good character. Should take to something artistic, that's very important.
The rest of the gifts continue without audible comments. However, Her keen interest in all gifts and presenting countries is evident.
The camp slipped into a happy sahaja panic at 3PM, when news came of puja being at 5PM, about right now. (noonish in usa).
We were away in the clouds of camp daglio, where an American yogini gave us first timers a comprehensive walk down the memory lane of children at Camp Daglio. We hurried back at a slow pace stopping to admire mother's house before coming back to camp cabella. Now settled in the pendal we await the beginning of puja.
Turning off my phone, much love and happy puja wishes to our USA family.
The unique weddings are now coming to an end with the 90! or so couples lining up to receive silver gifts. Many aspects of the marriages are completely refreshing. Firstly, the grooms arrived on horse drawn cart, back of a farm tractor and other out of the world vehicles!
Then at the conclusion they read out wishes from 4 to 10 year old children of the new centrassi school. all were cute, genuine and somewhat mature coming from a young cohort of sahaja yogi children. A sampler from memory:
"Wish you many good childeran' not naughty".
"What is outside is not important, what's important is inside."
"Have a lovely wedding."
"Never be angry, always love each other."
The couples have been just instructed to start composing couplets and qawwali singers from Romania are making their way to the stage. The newly weds will have their first meal together as a couple.
We've been here since last evening, but it feels like a month's worth of excitement has been imbibed. Yesterday 112 marriages were announed with 92 or so actually expected to happen in a few hours.
This puja has a special tinge of Romanian hosting to it, compared to Australian hosted Ganesha pujas I've attended. However the highlight of yesterday's evening of mehendi was music by the Hong Kong /Chinese collective.
It was a personal explosion of joy to see a Romanian presentation of interpretive dance to khalil gibran's poems. I had just finished reading gibran's "thoughts and meditations" on the way to cabella.
This morning was haldi, and those who know cabella, know that the river turns a deep shade of yellow and the haldi party's noise echoes in the valley. I am yet to meet my "daughter" whom I have to give away in marriage later. I was "voluntold" to be a "father of the bride" last night. Many Americans on the list, which of course adds to the excitemnt.

The listening to and the respecting of our Aboriginal Mothers in our parliment for the first time was perhaps of highest importance, and reminiscent of the great significance of needing to do so, as highlighted in the Mahabharata.
Mother, I bow to thee! Rich with thy hurrying streams, bright with orchard gleams, Cool with thy winds of delight, Dark fields waving Mother of might, Mother free. Glory of moonlight dreams, Over thy branches and lordly streams, Clad in thy blossoming trees, Mother, giver of ease Laughing low and sweet! Mother I kiss thy feet, Speaker sweet and low! Mother, to thee I bow.
Who hath said thou art weak in thy lands When the sword flesh out in the seventy million hands And seventy million voices roar Thy dreadful name from shore to shore? With many strengths who art mighty and stored, To thee I call Mother and Lord! Though who savest, arise and save! To her I cry who ever her foeman drove Back from plain and Sea And shook herself free.
Thou art wisdom, thou art law, Thou art heart, our soul, our breath Though art love divine, the awe In our hearts that conquers death. Thine the strength that nervs the arm, Thine the beauty, thine the charm. Every image made divine In our temples is but thine.
Thou art Durga, Lady and Queen, With her hands that strike and her swords of sheen, Thou art Lakshmi lotus-throned, And the Muse a hundred-toned, Pure and perfect without peer, Mother lend thine ear, Rich with thy hurrying streams, Bright with thy orchard gleems, Dark of hue O candid-fair In thy soul, with jewelled hair And thy glorious smile divine, Lovilest of all earthly lands, Showering wealth from well-stored hands! Mother, mother mine! Mother sweet, I bow to thee, Mother great and free!
Brothers and sisters, I have just returned from Nigeria where I went to inform and prepare the small collectives for the first ever tour. The tour is now a Europe-wide arrangement. Five Yogis from Europe have given their strong indication to be on the tour. We have not yet, and I think we should now begin to register our intention to be included so that plans will b e tailored accordingly. Initially I thought maybe we can leave this first tour for the men only, but Europe have overruled that. So Yogis and yoginis alike are invited on the tour and there are up to 15 places for us.
Sahaja Yoga has been invited to deliver a speech at a United Nations conference in Abuja Nigeria. Dr. Ramesh from Australia will be on the tour and will do the Abuja speech. This conference will have two thousand students in attendance. We will have public programs and followups in Abuja around the time of the speech.
We have seven places in the country to visit. At each, they will be well advertised public programs. So it is hoped those coming will be able to sqeeze two weeks for this tour. Tentatively, we hope to arrive Lagos for the 20th of October.
One thing about why we all need two weeks. Nigeria is a large country and the tour will take us far and wide. We want to avoid a situation where, while gone deep in the country as a group, some people have to retreat to Lagos because thier stay is shorter. The problem is that they may not be enough man resource worthy to trust the out going yogis with.
Dear brothers and sisters, This past weekend we were witness to a breakthrough and a new record in giving Self-Realization in our region: over 600 seekers received their Self Realization in 2 days at the International Festival in Houston !!! It was an incredible event, organized and executed with great care and passion by the growing Houston collective, with help from Austin (5 Yogis), Dallas (3 Yogis) and New York! (1 Yogi).
Set up in a park, with tents on the green Mother Earth who generously purified our vibrations continuously, the festival saw thousands of people mill around its various sections - this year's theme being China (India was 2 years ago). One interesting aspect that struck those of us coming from outside of Houston was that this was not a seekers fair, but just a cultural event with music, food and entertainment. In Dallas and Austin we've so far stayed away from such events, thinking that it would probably be too distracting and people would have their attention on other things.
Instead, we got a lot of "professional seekers" in an area who probably were unable to remember us from the myriad of other tables offering something that in their eyes was similar, and who would probably be hard to convince to stop from their never ending seeking. San Antonio, and now Houston, courageously jumped onto non-seekers festival and the results have been amazing (if you remember, San Antonio used to consistently give Realization to more people than in Dallas and Austin at their Festival of India - as I'm sure they will do again in less than two weeks). Contrary to expectations, despite the music and food (or perhaps because of them), people were very-light hearted and got their Realization very easily (also because they were not professional seekers), which was a pleasant and uplifting surprise. During the first day we had less than 10 chairs set up in our tent, with 3 sandwich-boards surrounding the altar and the chakra chart. It quickly became clear that they were not enough, as people started to spill onto the surrounding area, more than doubling our space, eager to receive their Realization even while sitting on the earth. During the second day we had a total of 14 chairs, and still they were not enough.
There were moments when, with all the Yogis present working at full capacity, some of us on two people at a time, there was still a thick cordon of people behind us standing and waiting for their turn. You turned and you thought to yourself - this is hopeless, how are we going to give Realization to all these people? And yet they stayed, some went, some came back, and without feeling any tiredness we kept spreading our Divine Mother's vibrations to all who desired it. Some stories from the Yogis present:- The Sahajayoga public program at the I-fest was the biggest event held in Houston recent times. About 600 seekers got their self-realization. It gave such a great satisfaction to experience the joy again and again when new seekers got their self realization. Just to look at the smiling and surprised faces of seekers when they felt the cool breeze flowing out of their hands and heads was a great experience. It was a wonderful collective effort and all of us Houston yogis, and our brothers and sisters from other cities of Texas enjoyed every moment of it. - We were short on volunteer wristbands initially and wondering how we will be able to manage. But later on, once the I-fest started, the event co-ordinator (Don) himself came over and gave us some extra ones. He even suggested that once we are inside, we can just recycle the wristbands. We were instructed on how to wear the volunteer bands "loosely" so they could be exchanged between volunteers - a "hint" we were given in secret by one of the organizers! - At the end of the first day, Don (event co-ordinator) came over specially to our canopy (me and Mandar were present) and congratulated us on the crowd he noticed throughout the day. So impressed was he that he told us that he organized such festivals throughout the year and gave us his card and asked for our email address so he can keep us informed about more events. - A seeker got his realization the first day. Apparently he had tried other types of meditation before and was aware of chakras and the subtle system. He could feel the cool breeze, but did not seem very impressed about it. I did not think much about it, but the next day, the same guy showed up again and was seen meditating near the side of our tent under a tree, looking very peaceful! - Honestly, the response at the fair was more than anticipated. But thanks to all the Yogis and their sincere efforts, it looked like we had done this together many times before. I am glad that Yogis from Austin and Houston could come down. It was a great weekend! - Thanks to Dallas, New York, Austin collectivity' s for their support in this special days here in Houston I am sure that our beloved Mother sent you here to spread her message. Her love was expressed in every person that was coming to experience our delight at the simplicity, beauty and sweetness with which our Mother can get Her message across.
It was a unique moment to feel so much love and how radiant we can get giving realization to others. Most of the people were very receptive and open, plenty of joy once they could feel the peace within. Was simply wonderful just like to be at the presence of Her and feel Her Lotus Feet in our heart. God bless Houston collectivity because all they stay supporting each other every moment. - "the wind showed the way"The morning of the first day, yogis had made the booth beautiful, with saris hanging from the canopy in a beautiful arrangement. .. but to their surprise, a huge gust of wind came just as the first seekers started to arrive... the saris were all blown down, to their surprise! It was realized later that once the saris were removed, our booth was made more visible from all angles! Though the beautiful decorations had to be sacrificed, more seekers were "shown the way" by the wind! - "ice cream for Realization"At the end of the festival, two yogis headed to one booth as it was closing down to get an ice cream, but the booth said they couldn't take money any more as the fair was already over. So, they offered the ice cream for free to the yogis, but they yogis said "We can't take it for free, you have to take something from us...." The ice cream vendor agreed, and the two vendors got a very clear "cool breeze" on the top of their heads as a gift! - "you can't judge a book by it's cover!"Another moving experience was when one yogi gave realization to a very skeptical young woman... it seemed as if she would not even take realization. .. then, when she did get her realization, she had a tremendous experience and felt as if her whole head opened! - "it can't be free! "During most of the festival, all the chairs were full of new seekers getting their realization, and there was always a crowd of people observing or waiting for their turn... After one yogi finished giving one seeker realization, he appropached someone waiting and asked if he'd like to give it a try.. the seeker asked "how much do you charge?" After hearing that it was for free, he surprisingly said "no way!" and before you could blink, he was sitting and waiting for the cool breeze! - "the skies were cleared for us" One huge gift of the Divine was the weather! Thunderstorms were predicted for the first day... Houston thunderstoms, with their immense power, would have surely left the booth empty (if the booth was even able to stand the storm!!).. but, as the Divine in Her Glory, would, the skies were cleared and the weather was absolutely beautiful all day - allowing all the 'Houston seekers to "come and get it!" - Because we w ere pressed by time, I "rediscovered" a method used by Shri Mataji in halls for people who felt hot above their heads: forgive. So every time I worked on someone and I could not feel the cool breeze above their head after a minute or two, I would ask them to say a few times "I forgive everyone". Without fail, the vibrations would start immediately above their Sahasrara. - I was working on a man who at the end did not want to come out of the meditation. He did not speak, did not open his eyes, did not move, even at my repeated bidding. I honestly thought he had falled asleep, so I left him alone and started talking to his wife. When I was done, he opened his eyes and all he could say was "wow!" He explained how he felt a lot of heat in his whole body, broke into a sweat, and then the heat was gone and he felt tremendous coolness coming out of his body. He got up from his chair, shook my hand, and said "I am a new man!" - The most moving experience of the fair for me was when a large Mexican family assembled near me, and a teenage girl broke away from the group and sat down to give it a try while the rest watched with interest. After working on her for a little while, since the vibrations were not present in the Sahasrara, I asked her to forgive everyone.
Still no vibrations, despite continuing to work on her for a while afterwards. Then it dawned upon me that she had not really forgiven. So I whispered in her ear to try again, but this time to say it from her heart, and to really mean it. Very shortly afterwards, the vibrations started to flow in her Sahasrara. I finished the workshop and started to talk to her, asking her to feel the breeze above her head, etc. She did, but she continued to keep her eyes closed. After talking to her for some time, I wanted to show her something so I asked her to open her eyes, which she was continuing to keep firmly closed. When she finally did open them, tears came streaming down and I realized that all that time she did not want me to see that she was crying. I cannot describe the look in her eyes at that moment. She had forgiven, whatever was there, and there was such a big relief, clear-out, wonderment, and gratitude for her Realization. Her sister immediately sat down and eagerly received her Self Realization in no time. It is happenings like these that reminded me of the tremendous difference we make in these people's lives when they get their Realization, whether we or they are fully aware of it at that time or not.
Here goes my personal account of experience of mothers visit. And also what I heard from Sahaja yogi's in Dubai.. I was not there all the time when things were happening... So please forgive me for any deviations...
We were informed well in advance that mother would be arriving.. and it is was decided informally that everybody would be given a chance.. and subtly there was an agreement that the newcomers would be sent ahead ; as in they would get to be in front of mother more.
Mother had come to Dubai before..so the older yogi's had many chances to be with her. There was a public program in Dubai in 2002...
Mother arrived at the airport..and the yuva's were there to welcome her..along with some seniors...As soon as mother sat in the car.. she said.. These are all the new ones.. where are the old ones.. When someone told her that Dubai collective was big and people are old..she said ' aacha' and then said.. These are new ones..
( this was told to us by an Uncle who was there in the car..)
Mother did comment that there was never that much traffic in Dubai.. It has only increased recently..
Then looking at a structure she asked - What is it.. Sir CP on being prompted by a sahaja yogi said that this would help relieve the traffic problems.
Shri Mataji Earlier greeted all at the airport and then also waiting sahaja yogi's at the airport and also at the hotel..
There were many people who were there at the hotel curious to know who was coming.. Among them was a iranian couple.. They asked and one sahaja yogi requested them to open their hands and stand.. they would explain all about sahaja to them after mother goes..
And they got their realization. On being asked what they felt..they said that they felt warm and cold sensation on their hands..
There were little children waiting in the lobby to greet mother.. Mother went to her room and said that the room decoration was very beautiful. She said that there were 100 children at the airport where were they now.
Then all the children were ushered up to her room.. She was very happy . She spoke them. She asked them if they knew how to sing bhajans.. Sir CP asked all those who sang bhajans to raise their hands.. All of them did. Mother said that she would like to meet all the children again tommorow. She said that she would like to meet all the sahaja yogi's. She said that she was here for two days and we must meet as much as possible. She asked the lady's who were sitting in one corner to come and sit close to her.. She then had one photograph of ladies taken with her . :) (Continued, below the video)
She also said that 'aap log paar ho gaye.. ( you all have been given realization) and we must give it to others. She asked us to call all the others who have not got their realization. It clearly meant that there would be a progrom the next day and what made it special was that it would be a public program. The night ended with hearing stories of what mother said in her room.. There were anecdotes, miracles, stories of angels conspiring to have ppl there at the right time beating the traffic et al.
So we all slept late... . so joyous also little aware that there are arrangements to be made for the hall for tommorow. The next morning…this and that happened and that and this happened .. and in the finale the organizers decided that the Hotel where mother was staying was the best place for holding the program....When the news came to us.. We looked to towards each other and said….did we not know it already..
Then followed the real cool part of decorating the place.. The hotel ppl came and said that u cannot do this adn u cannot hit a nail there.
and we were looking towards each other..
then a sahaja yogi would come .. saying..it is already there.. from the people who had used the stage earlier..
somehow the things rolled..and by aroung 7-30pm the stage was set beautifully decorated.
close to 600 ppl were there...
All faces did not look familiar.. so I guess there were some newcomers..
Many ppl staying at the hotel also seemed curious.
Then an announcement was made.. That Shri Mata ji and Sir CP would like to meet all the children upstairs in her room.. It was getting a little clear that mother would not come.. I remember speaking to some yogi's who had come down from Italy and asking them if they thought mother will come down.. They said yes she would.. we would get to see her.. Then I asked the other yogi if mother would come down..He said we must pray..
Then they asked me what I felt.. remember saying something special should happenn..wrong I was ..to demand...
Newcomers were getting their realization.. Someone just came and told me that everyone is allowed..Everybody got to go there and were allowed to offer their pranams.
Mother was sleeping right though and she did not open her eyes.
(I heard this story ..from some one..so ) There was this yogini ..who said that she wanted to take the darshan when she was awake. and with little prodding when the last sahaja yogi;s were in the line..She also entered the room... and just then mother opened her eyes...... She was the last yogini to get in.
Luckily I along with another bhaiya had the night shift that day.. Means that we had to get stuff for mother's breakfast and any other requirements.
Did not have to do much with that..but got to sit out there and meditate.. Mother got up quite early..adn she was there for breakfast.. We once again had her darshan... Then again we saw Mother through the Loby of the hotel.. She was looking at the sahaja yogi's..
The other took mother to the airport. and we stayed back to help with hotel room packing..
All in all it was beautiful...The experience of working along side sahaja yogi's, shopping for mother.. all of those little little things put in place a wonderful ending to my stay in Dubai..
